Group work intervention harnesses the benefits of cooperative learning to enhance opportunities for individual growth and is an essential skill in every social service practitioner’s handbook
Acquire group facilitation skills to achieve intervention outcomes and become a competent group work practitioner. Explore real-life challenge arising from group facilitation and uncover deeper issues through experiential learning. At the end of the training, learners will have gained an appreciation of using the self in therapy, and greater insight into personal challenges when managing groups.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Form groups appropriate for group sessions
- Motivate clients and address barriers to participation
- Identify risks and manage intergroup conflicts
- Utilise group dynamics to synthesise groups
- Facilitate group to achieve intervention goals and monitor outcomes
- Uncover therapists and clients issue at every stage of group development

Trainer

Kesava is an experienced clinical supervisor, group work practitioner and therapist. Kesava is a certified clinical supervisor and has a wealth of experiences in psychotherapeutic interventions. He is an experienced counsellor who openly provides consultations and support to aspiring practitioners. He is trained in multiple techniques, approaches, and disciplines, such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Family Therapy, Crisis Intervention and Reality Therapy. He is passionate about training and developing fellow practitioners to build a new generation of aspiring workers.

Course Outline
Developing appreciation
Knowledge-based training coupled with small group skills practice. Learners will explore the groupwork processes and facilitation techniques. Learners will understand the factors impacting group work practices.
Building relationships
Knowledge that supports the development of a group work practitioner. Learners will be exposed to theories of groupwork to build their competency as group work practitioners.
Supplementing the knowledge
Deeper appreciation of groupwork practice. Learners will undergo experiential group work practice to understand groupwork processes and issues in real-world application.
Becoming the change agent
Learners will uncover their beliefs and values systems and understand how these factors impact group dynamics and practices. Learners will solidify their understanding through a reflective process.

Course Description
Developing effective solutions to complex social problems is no easy feat. On the one hand, we want evidence-based programmes that are client-centred, ethical and inclusive. Yet on the other hand, we have time and resource constraints that we need to manage. How do we find that sweet spot?
Join us in learning how to integrate professional expertise, research evidence, and community inputs to develop effective social service programme. Analyse social problems from multiple viewpoints. You will be guided through the programme development process through experiential tasks, case studies and interactive discussions.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Assess clients’ social, emotional, psychological, and cultural needs through client-centred service principles and practices
- Incorporate inclusive practices as well as cultural and social considerations of client-groups into programme development
- Conduct environmental scanning on the existing client landscape, community needs and programmes available to inform programme development
- Apply the Logic Model to guide programme development and communication
- Determine manpower, resources and training required for delivering programmes
- Identify and tap on available community resources and funding schemes through the community assets analysis

Provided organisational support and consultation in organisational development and business continuity strategies to VWOs.
I am a registered social worker with a keen interest in organisational development and social innovation. I have established professional competency frameworks to support the professional development and training of over 200 counsellors, social workers, and psychologists. I have provided pro-bono consultancy to social service agencies in competency and appraisal frameworks, business continuity plans and knowledge management.

Building the foundation
Working with problems. Learners will acquire skills and techniques to expand and explore problems to attain clarity and develop concise problem statements.
Assessing the environment
Identifying the needs of clients, stakeholders and the community. Learners will apply needs and resource assessments to deepen understanding of the problem and determine the criteria and boundaries of the programme.
Applying the logic model
Application of logic model to guide programme design. Learners will identify the programme theory using the logical model, to guide the activities and resources required to attain the programme outcomes.
Implementing the programme
Communicating programme to seek resources and recruit participants. Learners will develop communication and publicity strategies, and to explore the funding sources available in the community to execute the programme.
