Mentoring for Youth
TGS-2020504713

Whether you are working with youth-at-risk; youths with difficulties coping or those who seem to be getting into all sorts of trouble that seem to be self-inflicted.

Do you know what they are trying to communicate through their behaviours? Can you make sense of their world? Or accept that what you see or experience is the result of their inner state – the turmoil and confusion they are experiencing that they cannot make sense of?

Their behaviours may be the result of the environments they were exposed to – if you cannot change these or make things better, how then can you be of help to them?

THIS COURSE IS ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING AND IS SFC-ELIGIBLE

Course Description

Mentoring for youths is not about how you can take charge of and help them resolve their issues. It’s about your willingness to experience their world and understanding what they are feeling and facing.
A youth mentor is someone who is trusted and invited into their world – to walk alongside them. To empower them to resolve the challenges they face with patience and guidance.

Because there isn’t a one-size fits all approach, you will be equipped with communication and mentoring techniques that have been time tested and proven to be effective. You will better understand their developmental needs so you can apply appropriate mentoring strategies to guide them.
Our Mentoring for Youths adopts a systemic ABCD approach to help you be a more effective mentor.

Course Outline

1

Appreciate their worldview

Understanding the reasons behind youths’ behaviours or activities is the first step to working with youths. Determine the needs of youths to identify appropriate mentoring approaches or techniques to support them.

2

Be evidence informed

Deepen understanding of youths' issues by examining youth developmental theories in the context of youth culture and the issues facing them. Apply these theories and principles to inform your work with youths.

3

Connect effectively

Learn and practice skills and techniques to establish trust to build a mentoring relationship with youths. They need to know that you care and can be trusted before they will let you into their world. Connections before anything else. Explore the attributes and attitudes required to work with youths.

4

Develop meaningful relationships

Develop meaningful relationships by learning how to build supportive environments. Help them explore meaningful change and be there to observe, monitor and to encourage their development. Be the catalyst for their change.
