Course Description

Mentoring youths can be a direct, yet complex and dynamic process. Having helping skills is not enough. To be effective mentors, it is important to understand youths’ worldviews and appreciate the functions of youths’ behaviours within their life experiences.

Uncover why youths engage in such behaviours and learn how to select appropriate mentoring approaches based on their needs. Be equipped to engage youths and inspire them towards greater heights in life. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse the needs of youths to determine mentoring approaches
  • Establish trust and build mentoring relationships
  • Apply principles and practices of youth mentoring when working with youths
  • Apply techniques to help youths understand and clarify their views, learn how to reach self-determined goals, and resolve emotional or interpersonal problems
  • Building supportive environment for youths to explore change
  • Monitor mentoring development

Duration

31 hours, 20 hours face-to face( 16 hours classroom, 4 hours online), 10 hours self-directed e-learning, 1 hour assessment

Trainer

Zul-trainer-blended-concept

Zul has more than 15 years of experience in youth work. He has a Master of Arts in Childhood and Youth. He is a registered training instructor with Ministry of Education, as well as a registered Social Worker with the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW).

Zul started his career as a case worker with the Singapore Boy’s Home. His passionate involvement with Singapore Boys’ Home provided him with valuable experiences and insights into the world and lived reality of youths. Within the premise of working at Singapore Boys’ Home, other than being a Caseworker, Zul Ikmal had taken on the role of an Aftercare Officer as well as a Programmes and Volunteer officer.

Zul provides counselling services to offenders in Singapore Prison Service and runs his own social enterprise conducting character building programmes for at-risk youths.

Learners who have successfully completed and passed the assessment will receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) in Mentoring for Youth issued by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).

Course Outline

Developing appreciation

Understanding the reasons behind youths’ behaviours or activities is the first step to working with youths. Learners will learn to determine the needs of youths to identify appropriate mentoring approaches or techniques to support youths

Building relationships

Engaging the youths. Learners will explore the attributes and attitudes required to work with youths. It will also cover the skills and techniques to establish trust and build a mentoring relationship with youths.

Supplementing the knowledge

Deepen understanding of youths' issues. Learners will examine youth developmental theories in relations to youth culture and issues. Learners will learn the theories and principles of youth mentoring.

Becoming the change agent

Learners will learn the skills to manage youths' engagement and facilitate change. Learners will explore the skills to build supportive environments to help youths explore change and to monitor youths' development

This course is organised by Environiche LLP, an approved training organisation under Singapore Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ).
