Managing Difficult Youth Behaviours with Strength-Based Strategies

Course Description

This workshop explores advanced techniques for managing difficult youth behaviours with a focus on positive psychology and motivational strategies. Participants will gain insights into the Good Lives Model (GLM), which moves conversations away from problematic behaviours to leveraging youths’ values for constructive engagement.

Practical skills in Motivational Interviewing, a conversation style that will enable facilitators to guide conversations away from a problem-centric focus toward empowering change conversations.

Participants will also learn to foster resilience in at-risk youths, turning challenges into opportunities for growth.

Objectives:

  1. Introduce the Good Lives Model (GLM) to empower facilitators to address challenging behaviours constructively.
  2. Teach Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques to encourage positive “change talk” while minimizing resistance (“sustain talk”).
  3. Strengthen facilitators’ ability to turn challenging moments into teachable opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Participants will apply GLM principles to foster growth-oriented interactions with youths.
  • Participants will practice MI techniques to motivate behavioural change and foster self-reflection among youths.
  • Participants will improve their ability to use conflict or resistance as opportunities to build stronger connections and promote learning.
