Course Description
You may have some basic engagement skills, but wish to enhance and use them more purposefully.
This Advanced Para-counselling course integrates essential counselling engagement skills into a structured helping process. Learners will understand various counselling theories and apply effective techniques to help clients achieve life-enhancing outcomes more intentionally.
The course aims to equip individuals with the fundamental knowledge and skills in counselling engagement, when working alongside with certified counselling professionals in their daily work.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Apply the Egan’s model for purposeful and outcome-focused client-engagement
- Apply probing techniques to uncover client’s story and determine underlying issues sustaining problems
- Utilise counselling theories and techniques to guide interactions with client
- Understand the basics of counselling theories, therapies, and techniques, including Psychodynamic Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive-behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-focused Brief Therapy and Person-in-Environment Approach

Vincent Soo (Positive Psychology Coach, Positive Psychotherapist, Mental Health Coach, H.O.P.E Alliance LLP)
Vincent holds a MSocSC Counselling and BA Psychology. As a Positive Psychotherapist and Mental Health Coach, Vincent works with adults and youths with depression, anxiety issues, ADD/ADHD, and other mental health issues. He is also facilitating two peer support groups and two meetup groups (Get Well & Flourish Meetup and Adult ADD/ADHD Advantage) to provide help, support, and education to improve the lives of people with depression and anxiety disorders. He also helps the single and couple peers to navigate their relationship challenges and establish great relationships with the significant people in their lives.

Target Audience
Individuals who have completed the Para-Counselling (Basic) and would like to deepen their competencies as a para-counsellor or;
Individuals who have experience working with social service beneficiaries and would like to hone their helping skills
Certification
Learners who have successfully completed and passed the assessment will receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) in Para-counselling (Advanced) issued by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG).

Course Outline
Building the foundation
Egan’s Model of a skilled helper. Learners will be introduced to the stages of the helping process using Egan's Model of a skilled helper.
Enhancing engagement
Learners will acquire skills to uncover clients' stories. Learners will integrate counselling micro-skills with the counselling techniques to identify underlying issues sustaining problems.
Purposeful engagement towards change
Acquire the skills to engage clients in a meaningful manner and to shift clients from problem-focused to a solution-enabling orientation.
Development of the self as a practitioner
Learners will uncover their beliefs and values systems and understand how these factors impact their effectiveness as a helper. Learners will learn the ethics, principles, and boundaries of the helping relationships.

Course Description

Equip yourself with fundamental counselling skills to enhance meaningful interactions with others. Walk alongside your clients, co-workers or loved ones through their tough times. Para-counselling skills come in handy when people just need a little push to get back on their feet without the need to visit a professional counsellor.

Building engagement skills and addressing communication barriers. Learners will be equipped with listening and questioning techniques to attend to clients and overcome communication barriers.
Experiential practice
Deeper appreciation of client engagement. Learners will put into practice the counselling techniques and skills in client-specific situations to support application in real-world situations.
Development of the self as a helper
Learners will gain better awareness of their self and how it impacts the helping relationships. Learners will learn about the ethics, principles, and boundaries in the helping relationships.
