Course Description

You may have some basic engagement skills, but wish to enhance and use them more purposefully.

This Advanced Para-counselling course integrates essential counselling engagement skills into a structured helping process. Learners will understand various counselling theories and apply effective techniques to help clients achieve life-enhancing outcomes more intentionally.

The course aims to equip individuals with the fundamental knowledge and skills in counselling engagement, when working alongside with certified counselling professionals in their daily work.

Course Outline

Building a foundation

Learn the Egan’s Model of a skilled helper and gain insights about what is happening at various stages of the helping conversation.

Exploration and discovery

Uncover clients' stories and guide clients through a process of self-discovery. Integrate counselling micro-skills with the counselling techniques to identify underlying issues sustaining problems.

Transforming and Touching Lives

Guide the conversation in a meaningful manner and to shift clients from problem-focused to a solution-enabling orientation, so that they are more ready to work on their challenges.

Personal Transformation

Deepen awareness of your beliefs and values systems and understand how these factors impact their effectiveness as a helper. Learn the ethics, principles, and boundaries of the helping relationships.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the Egan’s model for purposeful and outcome-focused client-engagement 
  • Apply probing techniques to uncover client’s story and determine underlying issues sustaining problems
  • Utilise counselling theories and techniques to guide interactions with client
  • Understand the basics of counselling theories, therapies, and techniques, including Psychodynamic Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive-behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-focused Brief Therapy and Person-in-Environment Approach

26.75 hours blended-learning including face-to-face learning, online learning and assessment

Other Course Information

Target Audience

Individuals who have completed the Para-Counselling (Basic) and would like to deepen their competencies as a para-counsellor or;

Individuals who have experience working with social service beneficiaries and would like to hone their helping skills

Certification

Learners who have successfully completed and passed the assessment will receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) in Para-counselling (Advanced) issued by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). 

Learners is required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and complete assessment in order to receive SSG funding and the certificate. 

Language of Instruction

This course is highly experiential, focusing on equipping you with the skills to enhance your interactions with others. Learners are to be prepared for roleplays and reflection of their own patterns of engagement with others. 

 

Entry Requirement

For the learners to be enrolled in this course, he/she will be screened for the following:

Literacy and numeracy capabilities equivalent to WPLN level 2 and above

At least 1-year of experience providing support services or peers.
